The following discussion is the theoretical basis for applying modern physics to an ancient craft.
While no conclusion can ever be considered to be absolute, there is little doubt that matter is largely comprised of energy existing in various configurations. It has been observed that, in relative terms, there are greater gaps between the particles which comprise matter, than there are between the larger objects which we see as comprising our known universe.
Matter is therefore largely energy.
The latest in theoretical physics suggests that, were the gaps (and hence the energetic state) removed from between the particles which comprise matter, then the Universe might fit into the space currently occupied by a single pea. [paraphrase of Stephen Hawkings]
An interesting thought indeed.
Our study of the Universe to date, within the parameters of physical science, has shown us that all of the known objects in space are in motion relative to various fixed points which are also themselves in motion around other relative fixed points. We have no definition, at this stage, of a truly fixed point.
The Universe is then in a constant state of high energy, and can be easily seen as a complex energy matrix.
While we can measure energy and quantify it and describe it and consider accurately its predictable behaviour, we do have a little trouble when it comes to its fundamental definition, and some of the explanations of its fundamental behaviour.
For example, I have yet to hear a reasonable explanation for the intact nature of the nucleus of an atom. Why does it not disintegrate? In terms purely electrovalent, it should explode.
Gravity is another of the most significant energy forms to our existence, which also lacks a definitive explanation. We are clever indeed, but it seems that we are as yet, not clever enough.
We can do amazing things with energy, but we do not have a definitive understanding of it.
Long before we got quite so clever in our definitions and study of energy, our scientific ancestors, the astrologers, holy men (and holy women) alchemists, blacksmiths and wizards of various craft, studied energy within the same matrix with a different name, this being the matrix of experience, and 'feel' if you like. They mostly considered the entire Earth as a living entity, or a series of the same, therefore studying energy within a matrix of Life.
In their observations, the Ancients, mapped phase and orb and aspect of the planets in motion as they saw these relating to our Earth. They ascribed various energies to the heavenly bodies, determined largely on how they saw the phase and function of the planets affecting mundane life, and so the intrinsic energies of the seven visible planets were ascribed over lifetimes, with wisdom being passed on for each subsequent generation of astrologers to add to.and improve upon with further contemplation and observation.
The Ancients continued mapping cosmic energy and began to make predictions based on the predictable behaviour of the planets. So we began to appreciate predictability as a function of energy.
By this description, the ancient astrology chart was a combination of the physics (study of energy in time and space) and metaphysics (study of energy within the matrix of Life) of its time, which the Ancients saw as a single science.
In modern physics, we can study energy using waves, energy waves will exhibit the property of resonance under certain conditions.
The delineation between Physics and Metaphysics has only been made in recent history, in my mind we would do well to bring the two back to their rightful status as a single science.
It is my view that Physics and Metaphysics are facets of the same subject. This was apparently a view held by the ancients as well. They viewed their world as a Living Whole, apparently unaware of the finer details of its purely physical attributes which we now know, and take for granted as fact, thanks to the study of modern physics.
The separation of the sciences has helped us to learn a great deal about each separate subject, but that great advance in knowledge has come at the expense of the holistic view.
I doubt very much that the agile minds of the ancient world would have any doubts at all about the usefulness of physical investigation in metaphysical phenomenon, especially when we have thousands of years of records with which to verify the model.
The application of wave theory, and, in particular, harmonic resonance, has a direct parallel with phase, orb and aspect as observed over thousands of years.
Resonance is experienced when two wave forms are brought into close proximity to the same harmonic pattern, or a direct derivavtive of that pattern. (Harmonics on a guitar fretboard are an obvious example of this)
In Axial Harmonics© we have divided the ecliptic circle into 7 unique harmonic levels, (2,3,5,7,11,13 and 17), and the various combinations of those harmonics which are either second or third (or both) resonant divisions of the unique levels, (4,6,8,9,10,12,14,15,16 and 18).
We have found that the experience of the combined energy of the planetary pairs is consistant with their resonant patterns. A planet's harmonic relationship to its natal position (harmonic phase) is also indicative of the type of activity the individual is likely to experience in regard to that planetary energy, that phase triggering resonant patterns in the natal chart as well.
Axial Harmonic Resonance is a proven physical model which actually describes more clearly the functions of phase, orb and aspect.
